Audiences and Institutions: The Woman in Black

The primary target auidnece for the woman in black is for those who enjoy films of the horror genre. More specifically those who enjoy supernatural horror films, as this film is based on ghosts and supernatural activities. The primary auidence is the main forcus auidnece for the film to be targeted towards. Where as the secondary auidnece is a more nieche auidence who the film may also appeal to. The secodnary auidnece for the woman in black is for people who are a fan of Daniel Radcliffe. He is a well known sucessful actor, known for the Harry Potter series, which has a lot of dedicated fans, and this film will target those fans who would be dedicted enough to go and see the new ilm he strars in.

The woman in black was marketed in a strategic way so the sales are maximised and the movie is well talked about amongst the public. The marketing for this film consisted of many different stages; there was the teaser campaign, the main campaign, the online marketing, the social marketing and the merchandise. The teaser trailer is a shorter version of the main trailer to give an initial feel for what the films about, to create a buzz so people begin to talk about the film. In the woman in black teaser trailer we learn a bit about the setting, and the fact it’s in an old house, in an olden era, which helps to set the scene. We also learn that Daniel Radcliffe plays the main character, which will then make the film appeal to the sub-genre. Through the use of the main campaign the use of; adverts, trailers, posters, articles, social networking and radio all played a part in getting this film talked about and out there to the mass public, appealing to the primary and secondary audience. The use of social networking was used on a large scale due to the high usage of young people, who would fit into the category of the primary and secondary audience, as many young adults and teens enjoy the horror genre, and many harry potter fans are of a younger audience, so the use of; Facebook, twitter and YouTube where widely used. Danielle Radcliffe himself was very on board with the marketing of this film, with him personally tweeting and Facebooking about the film, and doing many interviews and online videos about the film.

I believe that the marketing of a film are an important substance for the over all success of the film. If the marketing is on a large scale and is sucessful, through focusing on the right auidnece that would be interested in the film. The marketing helps to get the film known and talked about to create a buzz before the film is realsed so people will go and see it, which is the main aim of a film being released. The woman in black was marketed on a large scale with numberous methods to reach as many potential viewers as possible. Using numberours forms of technology such as; videos, social media and adverts, helped to reach the younger auidnece, while the use of newspaper articles and radio helped to reach an older auidence who may habe a potenial interst in the film. The large scale of marketing will ensuer that the movie will be known about to a wide spread audience and therefore will increase the chances of more potential viewers. Overall I believe the way the woman in black was marketed played a very large part in the scale of success it enduered, sue to the variations of marketing and the personal use of Danielle Radcliffe who done a lot of marketing for the film and had a very hands on approach to the marketing making it appeal to the secondary auidence of people who are a fan of him, as well as making the movie known about to a more wide spread audicne.

The release of the film was on a large scale with the film being shown in 2,855 screens in America in its opening weekend earning $20,874,072 and 412 screens in the UK earning £3,153,020.

The budget for the woman in black was 15 million USD which results in 9917355.75 British Pounds. The box office trends show that the woman in black was a high budget film. However due to the large scale of the marketing this contributed to the price of the film production. The weekend in which the film was first shown in public cinemas it made $54,322,273, which is already almost making the film profit from the production costs. The worldwide gross resulted in around $4128956290, which shows the large extent to how profitable this film was, exemplifying the success of the film.

I think the film was so sucessful due to the large marketing campeign, especially due to the fact it had close links with Daniele Radcliffe, who took a very on board, personal appraoch to the marketing, through doing numberous interviews, and online videos to seek as much attention for the film as possible, expecially taregting harry potter fans and fans of his work. Another reason for the success of the film, I believe is the fact that it’s extended from a novel written by the famous writer Sausan Hill, which isntantly gave the film recognition with people who are interested in her work and would want to see the film vaiation of her famous book.
